The absorption of local labor as an important asset in the development of operations of three business units under the PT Austindo Nusantara Jaya Tbk (ANJ) Group, which operates in the area of South Sorong Regency, West Papua. This has become a top priority for the company. This commitment certainly requires the support and cooperation of the local government in a real and sustainable manner.

The proof of ANJ's commitment is the presence of 830 workers, both native to Papua and born in Papua with various positions. Starting from the staff to the local contractor who now works for PT. Permata Putera Mandiri (PPM) and PT. Putera Manunggal Perkasa (PMP), as well as PT. ANJ Agri Papua (ANJAP).
Head of Government Relations and Stakeholders of the West Papua region, Gritje Fonataba said, employees are important assets that run the company's investment wheels in West Papua. The company has a strong commitment to absorbing local workers who have the education and skills in accordance with the required fields.
"Of our 244 employees who are indigenous Papuans, the majority are from the Iwaro tribe as many as 123 people. This is an achievement for us," said Gritje Fonataba.
Responding to criticism that ANJ prioritizes workers from outside Papua, the Head of Human Resources in West Papua, Wasikun explained that, there were around 2,500 workers in PPM, PMP and ANJAP. Both were employed directly by the three companies (around 40%) and the remainder through contractors.
Staff and non-staff positions in PPM, PMP and ANJAP are currently filled by a total of 555 local workers (native to Papua and born in Papua). The number represents 58%, while the remaining 42% is from outside Papua.
"Companies need skilled, educated and trained personnel. To overcome the availability gap in meeting those needs, the company organizes a variety of structured training, including vocational training, "said Wasikun.
In addition to this training carried out internally in the form of training for a maximum of three hours every day, the company also sends workers such as factory operators, emergency response teams to be trained at ANJ Group gardens in locations outside Papua. As in the gardens of North Sumatra, West Kalimantan or Belitung. So far, he continued, there have been 12 indigenous Papuans in staff positions and 18 local workers who have been undergoing vocational training since the end of 2018.
In line with the target of completing the palm oil mill at PMP, continued Wasikun, ANJ has conveyed to the South Sorong Regency Manpower and Transmigration Office that this year ANJ needs around 1,500 prospective workers for staff and non-staff positions.
Wasikun also explained that for three days (28 / 01-30 / 01) in January, ANJ representatives had coordinated with the Manpower and Transmigration Office in Teminabuan and obtained approval for the recruitment process for the prospective workforce in 2019.
"ANJ's plantations in West Papua do not yet produce palm oil, but the community has enjoyed a stable income. In addition, free health services for the community, skills development and career enhancement potential," he said.
Furthermore he said, until the end of 2017 the existence of the company through labor wages, had contributed more than Rp 35 billion which helped drive the regional economy. Beyond that, the company carries out community engagement and development programs in the fields of education, health and economic empowerment.
He also said that, PPM and PMP are legal entities operating in the South Sorong region based on licenses issued by the Regional Government and the Central Government. The company is always subject to the applicable laws and regulations in carrying out its business activities. Even ANJ has proactively implemented policies to ensure company activities, in line with its vision to improve the quality of human and natural life.
